The Uncrowned King (2023)
Inspired by the music of the Calypsonian the Mighty Shadow, these paintings seek to respond to his originality; to his empathy for the poor, for the disenfranchised, for animals; and to his expansive artistry, which drew him to treasures in dark places. He pondered death, which led to a vital life.
Shadow’s songs were unique, his vocals spanning a range both skillful and powerful. A gifted wordsmith, his uncompromising lyrics were distinct and raw. His focus on rhythm and the bass instrument were prescient. His black apparel with skeletons, unusual hats and cloaks, further forged his novel personal style. His legacy is the challenge he posed to the music industry, and its subsequent transformation due to his lasting influence. One of the “Greats”, the Mighty Shadow beats strongly at the heart of Trinidadian culture.
