The Tear Catcher (2018)

I paint what I love and fear. Honouring the tradition of painting, I push the boundaries of what I know, experimenting with subject matter and technique. I find enthusiasm and peace in the search for meaning. Ongoing inspirations for my work are death and fear, rejection and isolation, unrequited love and loss, disillusionment and grief. I find the world a sad place, even with all of its blessings. These paintings manifest as fleshy, three-dimensional objects that speak of a multi-layered awareness. I often paint with dark colours to signify the active existence of soul residing beneath my awareness. “Black”, mixed from blue, red and yellow paints, has depth and possibility, is steadfast and eternal, and conjures up infinity.

Ma Lou, my Father and my Grandmother have died. Their absences are a constant reminder of death’s finality. Earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust—cremation returns my family to the world. My loved ones’ ashes are inextricable from my dark, dusky dystopian landscapes. In the mysterious flow of life – where wounding, death and loss are our constant companions - I live with ghosts, and with the hope of resolution through love.

In the “Dark Night” it is difficult to see and the only certainty is obscurity. God’s relationship with me is hidden from my consciousness. I do not understand my journey but trust that I am loved unconditionally, and that I will be healed and transformed. In the pure, comforting and all‑encompassing darkness, I am led mysteriously to who I am.
